T.O.C.Looking at the Hardware

HardwareThe Mironics Minidisc Control Link (MMDCL-1) plugs into the computers parallel port. No further power supply is required since the Minidisc Suite™ powers it completely.

Hardware Plug

The Mironics Plug connects to your Minidisc Recorder's Remote control jack. Mironics has developed our own Minidisc Remote Control Connector for use with the Minidisc Suite™. Our plug has the advantage of permitting you to connect headphones directly into the recorder during use of the Minidisc Suite™.

T.O.C.Making the connections

Note : We recommend using AC power adaptors with the Mironics Minidisc Suite™. If titling on Battery Power, make sure the batteries are fully charged.
Do not make connections to the parallel port while your computer is running. Use standard shutdown procedures before making connections.
Make connection to the recorder's Remote Control Jack after the Minidisc Suite™ is running. Failure to do so will put your recorder into Fast Forward mode.

Hardware Connection1. Plug the MMDCL-1 (the plug with the 25 pin socket) into the parallel port before starting the software. Be certain that the parallel port plug is firmly seated in the computer port and that the thumbscrews are gently tightened.

2. Start the Minidisc Suite™ software.

Hardware Plug3. Make connection to your Minidisc recorder with the gold plated contacts facing up and the cutout of the plug towards the headphone jack. If you attempt to use the Mironics plug upside down, no harm will result but the system will not control your Minidisc recorder.

Hardware Monitor

4. Your favourite headphones may be connected after you connect the Mironics plug to the remote jack of your recorder. The headphones must be unplugged first, before unplugging the Minidisc Suite™ plug.

Note :The MMDCL-1 by default works on your computer's LPT1. If you wish to connect the MMDCL-1 to your computer's LPT2, a change in setting is required in the Minidisc Suite. Please contact the Mironics Technical Support Team for guidance in this process.

T.O.C.How the Hardware works

1. The software powers up the MMDCL-1 so that it can now function in place of a normal manual Minidisc Remote.

2. The software then signals a state of the art patented circuit to issue commands to the Minidisc recorder.

3. The Minidisc recorder interprets these signals as though they are coming from the remote controller itself.

4. The software has no way of knowing what is going on at the Minidisc recorder end of the system but because of complex calculations and algorithms used by Mironics in the software the hardware can actually control the Minidisc completely.

5. Refer to the "DIY Section" for more technical details.

T.O.C.Using the Hardware

1. Do not remove the label or open the housing of the MMDCL-1. Doing so will void the warranty.

2. The IC circuitry is sensitive to static electric damage.

3. Keep the MMDCL-1 from moisture, heat and magnetic fields.

4. Never force any connections. If something will not plug in easily, remove and inspect for problems in the jack or on the plug.

5. The headphones must be inserted after and removed before the Mironics plug can be inserted or removed.

6. Never attempt to use your printer and Minidisc Suite™ simultaneously from the same printer port. The signals used to trigger the MMDCL-1 could damage your hardware and printer. Y cables are not to be used but instead Port switches are available so that you are not required to connect and disconnect each time you use your Minidisc Suite™. Refer to the "Tips" section for information.

T.O.C.Precautions

On safety

1. Do not touch any metal objects to the contacts of the MMDCL-1.
2. Do not make any connections to the Computer while the Computer is switched on.
3. Always shut down the Computer before making any connections.
4. The MMDCL-1 is sensitive to static electric charges.
5. Exposure to electrostatic charge voids the warranty.

On installation

1. Never use the MMDCL-1 where it will be subjected to extremes of light, temperature, moisture or vibration.
2. Never wrap the MMDCL-1 in anything when it is being used. Heat buildup in the unit may cause malfunction or damage.

On cleaning

1. Before attempting to clean the MMDCL-1, please disconnect it from the Computer.
2. Clean the MMDCL-1 casing with a soft cloth slightly moistened with water or a mild detergent solution.
3. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzene as it may mar the finish of the casing.

T.O.C.Warranty Information

1. Warranty included with Mironics hardware covers parts and labor.

2. Warranty does not cover tampered, opened hardware or misuse and abuse.

3. This warranty does not cover any incompatibilities due to the user's computer, hardware, software or any other related system configuration the MMDCL-1 is installed with.

T.O.C.Tips and Tricks

1. If you want to use your Minidisc Suite™ and your printer then you can use the following options.
- Buy a parallel port splitter that has a switch to switch between your printer and the Minidisc Suite™.
- If your printer supports USB, connect your printer to your computer via a USB connection and the Minidisc Suite™ via the parallel port.
- Connect a daughter I/O or PCI card to you computer to add another parallel port. Connect your printer to the new parallel port.
Note : The Minidisc Suite™ will only work from LTP1 or LPT2.

2. If a standard headphone plug does not fit into your Minidisc recorder when the Mironics plug is used, try using the headphones from your Minidisc remote controller.
